ENG 214 Medieval Welsh

Craig R. Davis, M W F 10:00 AM-10:50 AM

An introduction to the language and literature of medieval Wales in a series of grammar lessons and daily readings from The Four Branches of Mabinogi. These searching tales of love, loyalty and moral testing are set in a legendary pre-Roman Britain, mystically contiguous with a parallel universe called Annwn 'the Un-world' or 'Otherworld' of ancient Celtic tradition. Students will acquire an oral mastery and reading knowledge of the very earliest “British” literature. This course fulfills the language requirement for Latin Honors and can be continued in ENG 217: Studies in Medieval Literature: Archaic British Myth and Legend. {F,L}
