ENG 295 Advanced Poetry Writing

Joan Larkin, T 1:00 PM-3:50 PM

In this workshop course, we will constantly practice writing poems, presenting them for in-depth discussion in class and in individual conferences, and strengthening them through revision.

Students are expected to read and comment constructively on their colleagues' work, and active participation is a requirement.  Reading aloud will play a role. Careful, close reading of a range of traditional and contemporary poems will support and deepen our exploration of our craft.

Attendance at the fall Poetry Center events is required; these happen on certain Tuesdays: the Q&A at 4 PM, and the reading at 7:30 PM.

At the end of the semester, students will create chapbook manuscripts of their best work.

If you are interested in this course, please submit five poems and a letter describing your poetry background and what you will bring to the course. These should be sent to the English Department, Pierce Hall 105, or emailed to the department assistant, Jennifer Roberts, jroberts@smith.edu by August 16, 2013.
