787 Interiors Certification Engineer, Boeing

Linda Sorto

Soon after graduation, I relocated to Everett, WA, to accept a position as a 787 payloads engineer with the passenger seats group at Boeing. In that position, my primary responsibilities were focused on project management, development, installation and certification of supplier designed passenger seats. This opportunity gave me the expertise in working directly with different engineering groups within Boeing as well airline customers and suppliers.

Within my first year I was promoted from a level-one to a level-2 engineer and was recognized for successfully leading my seat supplier to a catalog drawing system that supported the 787 strategy. Within three years, my responsibilities expanded from junior seat engineer to mentor and acting lead.

In 2012, I transitioned to my current position as a 787 interiors certification engineer. I lead the development of multiple certification plans for complex customer configurations. My specialty involves project management of the first 787-9 interior crashworthiness compliance and airplane delivery certification activities. In addition, I have led the implementation and development of a database for certification plan management to be used throughout the organization.

Through the Ed Wells Partnership with the Boeing Company, I have received training in topics that include time management, records keeping and information transferring, among others. My most recent training includes a short course from the University of Kansas on FAA functions and requirements leading to airworthiness approval registration, and graduating from the Executive Development Institute (EDI), a one-year leadership program that admits a limited group of management-approved individuals each year.
