Carol Berner has been teaching and supervising at Smith since 2004. Prior to that, she served on the graduate faculty of Bank Street College of Education and taught elementary school for 12 years in New York City and Connecticut. Berner earned her A.B. in history and literature from Harvard University and her M.S. Ed in early childhood and elementary education from Bank Street.
Berner is regional coordinator for River of Words, a place-based poetry and art initiative designed to promote watershed awareness, literacy and the arts in the Connecticut River Valley. Berner collaborates with local schools and community organizations to develop arts-integrated investigations that engage students and teachers in science learning and environmental advocacy.
Berner teaches EDC 338 Children Learning to Read and EDC 232 Understanding American Middle and High Schools. These courses reflect her interests in literacy, education history and policy, and integrates theory and practice to gain a better understanding of how children and teachers learn.
