WordPress Dashboard Overview

The “Dashboard” is where you add and edit content on your WordPress site. The dashboard provides general information about your site, as well as quick access to different resources via different boxes called “At a Glance”, “Activity”, “Quick Draft”, and “WordPress News”. You can do anything you need to do on your site by accessing the links in the sidebar on the left.

How to Access the Dashboard

When you log in to WordPress, the dashboard of your site will open. The “Dashboard” page provides quick access to the site’s content, as well as administrative tools to customize your site design.

Note: To quickly go back to the dashboard from the front-end of your site, at the top-left side of the page, click the name of your site. The back-end will open to the “Dashboard” page.

The “Dashboard” screen presents information in blocks. By default, the Smith College WordPress page delivers four blocks of information on this page: At a Glance, Activity, Quick Draft, and WordPress News.

  • “At a Glance” summarizes the posts and pages created on the WordPress site.
  • “Activity” shows the latest logs on the creation of posts or pages.
  • “Quick Draft” allows you to quickly create a post on your WordPress site. Posts can not be published on the site from this block.
  • “WordPress News” lists the latest news from the official WordPress blog.

The toolbar is located on the left side of the dashboard.  The toolbar gives access to add content and configure settings of the site. Some of the functionalities you will encounter there include “Posts”, “Media”, “Pages”, “Appearance”, “Users”, and “Settings”. For more information about these options, see “Additional Resources” on the right side of the page.
