Attend Meetings Remotely with the Double Telepresence Robot

Double Telepresence Robotics allows users to attend classes or meetings when they can’t attend in-person. Double is being used in higher education in many ways, including building hybrid classrooms with both online and in-person students, allowing guest speakers to join a meeting remotely, and enabling offsite users to actively move through the meeting space.

Classroom Setup Instructions

On-Location Setup

Turn the iPad on (press sleep/wake button on bottom-left of tablet).

Confirm that iPad is connected to WiFi (eduroam or registered devices)

Open the Double app. After the app opens, the screen will display a map and the name “ETS Robot.” The app is now ready for the driver to connect remotely.
Note: If the app requests permission to connect to the “Double 10-009811” base, choose Allow.

Once connected, the driver will be able to move the Double out of the charging bay.

Return the Device to the Charging Station

According to the manufacturer, the Double robot should support 8 hours of normal use on a single battery charge. In order to ensure that the robot is ready for each class day, please return the device to its charging station at the end of the day.

Once the meeting is over and the driver has disconnected, press the P button on the tablet screen to engage the parking brake. A small kickstand will extend from the base of the Double.

Lift and place the Double into the charging station with the iPad facing outward. Make sure that the Double’s pole is touching the metal contacts on the charging station. In the charging station, the LED light on the base of the double will be Orange to indicate charging, and Green when fully charged.

Turn the iPad off (press sleep/wake button on bottom left of tablet).

Troubleshooting Instructions

The user is connected, but I can’t hear audio from the Double

  • To turn the device volume up, use the volume controls on the bottom-left edge of the iPad.
  • To increase volume in the Double app, drag the slider button in the bottom left of the screen up.
  • Check whether the user has muted their microphone.

The Double won’t move

  • Confirm that the parking brake is disengaged (either by having the driver press the P button on their tablet, or doing so on the Double’s screen. Do not try to physically force the parking brake to open or close.

The iPad is not connected to the Double base

  • Confirm that Bluetooth is on connected. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and select Double 10-009811 under MY DEVICES.
  • Completely quit the Double app. Swipe up from the bottom bezel of the iPad to open the Control Center. Swipe up on the Double app. Restart the app and wait for the user to reconnect. Please note, when the call reconnects, you may need to adjust the volume levels.

The app has crashed or frozen

  • Completely quit from the Double app. Swipe up from the bottom bezel of the iPad to open the Control Center. Swipe up on the Double app. Restart the app and wait for the user to reconnect. Please note, when the call reconnects, you may need to adjust the volume levels.
  • If you’re having issues connecting after restarting the app once, try restarting the iPad. Press and hold the sleep/wake button until you see the slide to power off slider displayed. Power off and wait for the device to shut down. After the screen goes black, hold the sleep/wake button until you see the apple logo displayed on the screen.

Important Note: The Double Robot has a telescoping pole to change the height of its camera. When this pole is extended, it makes the device top-heavy. Please do not drive the robot with the telescoping pole extended, otherwise the device may tip over.

On an iPad, open the Double app. Or, using a Chrome browser, visit http://www.doublerobotics.com, then click Login (upper right corner of page)

Enter user credentials (provided by Classroom & Event Support and click Log In.

The “ETS Robot” will appear on the map. Click to start call.
