Alumna pens letter to the editor of the ‘Wall Street Journal’
Wall Street Journal    11/14/2014
Nancy Burton ’78 is the author of a letter to the editor in today’s Wall Street Journal. In her letter, Burton responds to a recent Journal op-ed about free speech and campus discourse. “When I attended Smith,” Burton writes, “most of us opposed the idea that we women are but fragile flowers to be shielded from the rough and tumble of rigorous intellectual debate, or from the contents of books, or from any ideas, however unorthodox. Preparing students to be able competitors in the marketplace of ideas was once a chief goal of a liberal arts education. Isn’t it still?” [For a copy of this story, email Marti Hobbes.]
