A MESSAGE TO STAFF ABOUT VOLUNTARY SCHEDULE REDUCTIONS / April 15, 2009

Dear Staff Member:

Over the past few months, a number of you have suggested that you would welcome the ability to reduce your schedule in a way that would meet personal needs and also allow for cost savings for the college. Now, we are offering staff members an opportunity to propose schedule changes as part of our budget reduction strategy. This program is purely voluntary and we are interested in hearing from staff members who would like to volunteer to reduce their schedule on an ongoing basis. In some cases, a job function may be able to be performed under an alternative, reduced schedule. This might be a reduction in the hours you work per week (for example four days instead of five, or, for hourly staff, a reduction in the hours worked per day), or weeks you work per year, such as working 10 months instead of 12.

Anyone interested in considering such a reduction is encouraged to speak with their supervisor. He or she will talk with you about the possible impact of this reduction on your work responsibilities. Not all voluntary reductions may be possible, but managers have been asked to submit their recommendations and thoughts to the senior administrator in their area. If you are interested in volunteering, please make an appointment to talk to your supervisor no later than Friday, April 24.

All requests should detail the reduced schedule and the timeframe for its implementation. Please consult with Kevin Kerwood in Human Resources at ext. 2266 if you have questions about the impact of a reduction in hours on your salary and benefits.

The senior administration will review all proposed voluntary reductions in work schedule and determine which can be accepted by the end of June 2009. Your manager will communicate the outcome of this decision to you. If the proposed change is approved, this will be also confirmed in letter from Human Resources, with a confirmation of any impact the reduction in hours has on your pay and benefits.
