Potential Data Breach

Updated November 4, 2009

A breach of data security occurred sometime during the evening of October 26, 2009 at the Springfield offices of Moriarty & Primack, the independent auditors for Smith College’s Emeriti Retiree Health Benefit Plan. Moriarty & Primack have sent letters to the Smith employees enrolled in the Emeriti plan to notify them of a breach of data security.

Because of state laws concerning security breaches and the ongoing investigation by authorities, the attorney general has advised that we provide no additional information at this time. As information becomes available we will post it here.

Smith College regrets any difficulty or concern this incident may cause to its employees. Data security is a responsibility Smith takes very seriously, whether on our own campus networks or in the rare situations where confidential data is accessed by a third party.

Questions may be directed to Patrick Leary at Moriarty & Primack, One Monarch Place, Springfield, MA 01144, (413) 739-1800; Smith College’s Department of Human Resources, (413) 585-2260; or William Sheehan, Smith College Director of Accounting, at wsheehan@smith.edu.
