FAKE BREAD

Warm milk and add sugar
and - for lack of raisins
in the tropics -
also throw in the legends of treasures.

Place the yeast
in lukewarm water,
adding more milk
and half the flour from
the unending dream
of river farmers.

Thicken with melted lard.
Cover and let it rest
for four hundred years.

Place in the tropics' hot oven
and bake until dried.

Every day eat a small piece
with a cup of the night's thick chocolate.
