Members Exhibition Preview: The Lay of the Land
- Thursday, June 16, 2016
Join Linda Muehlig, exhibition curator and curator for painting and sculpture, for a preview of the new exhibition, The Lay of the Land: Contemporary Landscapes from the Collection. This exhibition features contemporary American landscapes (paintings, sculptures, and works on paper) from the museum’s collection (from c. 1970 to the present). The show offers a wide variety of perspectives on the landscape in its natural, altered, or re-imagined forms and a range of topographies from cultivated lands, to forest, and desert.
Local scenes by local artists include Stephen Petegorsky’s photograph of the Meadows, Scott Prior’s early portrait of a “nuclear” Northampton, and Sally Curcio’s bubble sculptures of Happy Valley. Newly acquired landscapes from North Adams-based artist Mike Glier showcase works created during a trip along a line of longitude beginning in the Arctic circle and extending in a quarter turn around the earth. Stephen Hannock’s monumental painting The Oxbow, after Church, after Cole presents a contemporary version of the iconic landscape feature of the Oxbow of the Connecticut painted by the nineteenth-century masters Frederic Church and Thomas Cole.
The exhibition is made possible by support from SCMA’s members.
Members: $5 | Student Members: FREE Members may bring up to 2 guests. Space Limited.
