• The Magic of Portraits: Mrs. Nesbitt as Circe

    Students will learn what a portrait is and explore all the ways a portrait can tell us something about its subject. Then students will make their own portraits.

  • A Whirl of Colors: Seurat’s Woman with a Monkey and the Color Wheel

    Students will learn the definition and relations of primary, secondary and complementary colors using Georges Seurat’s Woman with a Monkey, a study he made in preparation for the well-known A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, located at the Art Institute of Chicago. Through discussion and hands-on activities, they will use Seurat’s techniques to learn new vocabulary in a fun and creative way.

  • Playing with Patterns: Oba’s Crown (adenla) from the Yoruba people of Nigeria

    Students will use Oba’s Crown (adenla) as a basis for understanding the concept of pattern. They will then make their own patterns with paper cut-outs and crayons.
