Faculty Support

Faculty can apply for up to $1,000 in funds to support a Community-Based Learning (CBL) course or a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) project, including field trips, guest speaker honoraria, meeting costs and materials for learning/research activities and reports.

How to Apply

Please submit the application below in June for courses to be taught in the fall semester and in November for courses to be taught in the spring semester.

Requests are subject to approval by the provost. Please support and explain each item's relationship to teaching and learning.


If approved, you will be asked to submit all expense receipts to the JCCE director. Funded faculty are required to participate in an end-of-the semester meeting to evaluate and reflect on their semester's experience as well as to complete the agreements listed at the end of this application.

Are you interested in JCCE’s assistance in structuring CBL pedagogy, connecting with other Five College faculty, or identifying and developing a community partnership?*


Describe needs below, using cost estimates provided here. If details needed to make a reservation will not be available at least 14 days in advance of trip, use these costs:*

  • $80 for van (6 to 11 passengers), to Holyoke, Springfield or anywhere in MA (6 to 11 passengers)
  • $35 for car (4-5 passengers) to Holyoke or Springfield

The Jandon Center will make the arrangements for transportation for those who are awarded funds.

If awarded, please email the Jandon Center at with trip details:

  1. CBL course number
  2. Name of a Five College certified driver
  3. Date
  4. Name of destination (including address)
  5. Departure time
  6. Return time

Details must be finalized before the Jandon Center can make the reservation. If you can provide all the trip details with at least 14 days notice, the following cost estimates will apply:

  • $20 for 6-passenger van to Holyoke
  • $30 for 11-passenger van to Holyoke
  • $35 for 6-passenger van to Springfield
  • $45 for 11-passenger van to Springfield

After the trips, for our records, please submit names of student drivers, student passenger names, and duration of trip and event.

Expense budget

Complete a budget estimate by adding all preceding items with associated dollar costs. This estimate can be used during your preliminary meeting with the Jandon Center director. Please include quantities, costs and dates.*

IRB Policy

In accordance with college policy, Smith's Institutional Review Board (IRB) must review any activity that involves collecting information from human subjects. This includes student community-based research projects that use interviews. See Have you sought, or plan to seek, IRB approval for research projects related to this course?*

Funding Agreement

If funded, I agree to provide and follow through with the following:*

  • Receipt for expenses
  • Roster of all students in the class
  • A course syllabus
  • Detailed transportation reservation information
  • Names and W-9 forms, and presentation dates for honoraria recipients
  • Attend an end-of-semester meeting of CBL faculty
