Judy Franklin researches machine learning and improvisation, currently focusing on systems based on recurrent neural networks that can learn to improvise jazz. Results are applicable to general time-series improvisation. She has received funding from the National Science Foundation for this work. She is also investigating the use of sound to demonstrate computer algorithms in her teaching and, conversely, teaches a course on how to use algorithms to create new sounds.
