Joshua M. Wood's research and teaching expertise lies in early modern philosophy, especially metaphysical issues in Locke and Hume. He has additional teaching experience in the areas of 19th-century philosophy, existentialism and value theory.

Before teaching at Smith College he taught in the philosophy departments at Amherst College (2013–14) and Wellesley College (2014–15).

At Smith, Wood has taught in the First-Year Seminar Program (Doing Good in the World), in the philosophy department (the courses Ethics and Desire), and in the government department (the courses Introduction to Political Theory and Science Fiction and Political Theory).
