Abhilash Medhi is a historian of modern South Asia. His research examines histories of land settlement, agrarian governance and railway infrastructure to trace how, between 1840 and 1930, the Indo-Afghan borderlands and northeast India came to be incorporated into colonial state space while simultaneously being shaped into the frontiers of British India. His interests include borderlands, capitalism, colonial knowledge, spatial theory and travel writing. At Smith, Medhi is offering a course on Modern South Asia (1700 to present).
