The new Neilson Library will be more than a beautiful building on campus; it will also be a space that supports new ways to learn and share knowledge. Susan Fliss, Smith's dean of libraries, outlines some of the library features designed to meet current and future educational needs.

A Milestone Moment
All members of the community are invited to attend the groundbreaking for the new Neilson Library at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, October 19, on Seelye Lawn. A reception will follow.
The event will feature remarks from:
- Architectural Designer Maya Lin
- President Kathleen McCartney
- Board of Trustees Chair Deborah L. Duncan ’77
- Provost Katherine Rowe
In October 2016 Maya Lin unveiled designs for a new Neilson Library, incorporating the original 1909 structure and reimagining the complex as an intellectual commons.
The project began in summer 2017 and will be completed for the fall semester of 2020.
The intellectual heart of the campus, Neilson Library advances and celebrates learning, benefiting all who come to Smith.
