While on the Smith College campus or participating in Smith College programs, guests and clients are expected to follow the policies, regulations and laws set forth by Smith College, The Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Unites States Federal Government.
Alcohol is prohibited in all residence houses and rooms and all other Smith College buildings unless served by the Conference Center, Campus Center, or the college's Dining Services staff or a licensed caterer approved by the college.
Smith College retains the right to revoke the campus privilege of any participant if, solely in our opinion, his or her conduct is unlawful or potentially injurious to the academic community.
- Footwear and clothing (including shirts) must be worn in all dining rooms and classrooms
- "Quiet hours" are 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., both inside and outside of buildings
Smith has identified some campus spaces with air conditioning as Cooling Centers. When the National Weather Service announces an Excessive Heat Watch for Hampshire County, you will be offered the option to use these spaces for relief from the heat, including overnight. You may also use the air-conditioned dining rooms in your house during the evening. Dining rooms may not be used overnight due to health regulations. Please note that excessive heat may cause the loss of computer servers and electrical power beyond the control of the college.
Housekeepers are responsible for cleaning all house bathrooms and public areas. Guests are responsible for cleaning their rooms. Housekeepers will be happy to assist you with locating cleaning supplies.
All houses and rooms are inspected prior to the start of each conference and each participant's check-in. Please promptly report any damages or problems to your conference director. Bicycles are not allowed in houses above the basement level. Bulletin boards are provided in hallways to post information. Do not tape or tack notices or decorations to walls, woodwork or wallpaper. For participants enrolled in sports programs, all cleats must be put on and removed outside all buildings (cleats do severe damage to our carpets and wood floors).
Fans will be provided if they are requested in advance. Conferences are charged $30 for each missing or damaged fan.
Conference directors are responsible for distributing and collecting keys to the residence rooms. They must be returned to the Summer Conference Services Office when the conference is completed. If a key is lost, please check first with campus safety at 413-585-2490 to learn if it has been turned in. If not, notify your conference director to order a replacement. Lost keys present a security risk to the conference's participants and other summer guests and mandate prompt core changes for the safety of all. Conferences will be charged $20.00 for each missing room key. Keys not returned within 72 hours of checkout will be deemed lost and fees will be charged to the conference.
Washers and dryers are located in the basement or on the first floor of each house.
Pets of any kind are prohibited in residence halls with the exception of service and support animals. It is the college’s policy to permit service animals as defined by state and federal Laws. The college may also permit support animals, as determined on a case by case basis by the college, to reside in the residence hall with a student with a documented disability as a reasonable accommodation under the Fair Housing Amendments.
Smith College is proud of its recycling program. Labeled containers are on the first floor of all residence houses. If you have any questions, please ask the housekeeper or custodian for help.
Smith retains the right to designate specific employees to enter any room for the purpose of inspection, maintenance or emergency, and the right to reassign residents within a residence house, after timely notification, to accomplish necessary repairs or renovations of the building.
Telephones in residences are equipped with Caller ID displays and speakerphones. These telephones offer a basic service package that includes access to local, on-campus and toll-free calling. Long-distance calling is accessible with a prepaid card or calling card with toll-free access. To make outside calls from a campus phone, dial â€œ9," then â€œ1," then the 10-digit telephone number. If the handset is left off the hook, a signal will report a problem to campus safety.
Custodians are responsible for waste removal, recycling and general maintenance of the buildings. For safe disposal of any syringes or infectious waste, you must notify the Summer Conference Services Office in order to obtain the approved waste container.
Lost and Found
Call campus safety at 413-585-2490 or visit 126 West Street between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Parking is free. Guests may park in white-lined spaces in any campus lot or in the Parking Garage (starting at Level 2,) except in spaces identified as Handicapped, Reserved, United Way, Visitor, Zipcar or Carpool. The conference director will receive and provide parking permits for each driving participant. Place the parking permit on your dashboard where it can be easily seen.
Individuals in need of special parking arrangements because of a disability should contact the campus safety at 413-585-2490.
Smith College will issue parking tickets if you are not parked in an authorized location, with a minimum $20 violation up to $100. Neither Campus safety nor the Summer Conference Services Office will waive parking tickets. Appeal forms are available through campus safety, and must be filed within 30 days from issuance of the parking violation.
Smith Access Cards
Your conference director may provide you with a Smith Access Card which identifies your group and the dates of your visit and may also be programmed for access to your house, the dining hall, and athletics facilities. Smoking is forbidden inside all college buildings, as well as within 25 feet of the outside of all college buildings. Please do not dispose of cigarette butts on campus lawns and gardens.
