And Great Gardens of Southern England

Nowhere in the world is the passion for horticulture expressed more vividly than in Britain, where gardens have served as inspiration for painters, writers and poets for centuries. Accompanied by John Berryhill, landscape curator for the Botanic Garden of Smith College, alumnae and fellow garden lovers will visit and explore some of England’s most famous gardens at a time of year when colors run rampant.

From great country estates to minuscule inner-city gardens, the British use their exceptionally long growing season to fullest advantage, and we have timed our visit accordingly. Begin in Richmond with a visit to Kew Garden, where members of the Kew science staff will offer a private tour of the grounds. Meet with Smith students who intern at the Royal Botanic Gardens in molecular biology and conservation genetics.

Take in the local sights, including a tour of the Corinium Museum while in Cotswold Hills. After a short drive to Winchcombe enjoy the 10 magnificent gardens located at Sudeley Castle. Devote a full day to Britain’s most famous spring garden event, the Chelsea Flower Show, followed by an optional visit to London’s oldest botanic garden, the Chelsea Physic Garden.

This special adventure through London, the Cotswolds and Windsor explores the very best of English gardens. Reserve your space soon as participation is limited to only 25 travelers.
