Shanti Freitas ’08
has been named among the top nine finalists for Woman
of the Year by the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) for her athletic and academic accomplishments,
and demonstrated service and leadership.
The NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced on
October 19.
Smith
students rank seventh nationally in the proportion
registered to vote, according to Rock the Vote's "Ultimate
College Bowl" competition. For those who haven't

Thanks to a composting program begun
last year, the kitchens of Cutter-Ziskind, Chase-Duckett and Tyler houses each
collect about a ton of uneaten food a month, which is delivered to a nearby

Mountain Day
2008 was a typical New England fall day: some clouds,
some afternoon sun, and an array of colors splashed
across the Pioneer Valley.
Mountain Day, on Oct. 3, inspired a blog's worth
of as students picked apples,
climbed nearby mountains, and just relaxed.
A practicing
lawyer who wants to change careers and a woman with
a master's degree in statistics who wants to delve
further into the subject are among women who were drawn
to campus this year by one of three programs offered
by the Center for Mathematics.
Fireworks will
illuminate the sky over Paradise Pond on Friday, Oct.
24, in celebration of Family Weekend. The event was
added to the festivities this year to emphasize the
