- Majors and minors in American Studies and in Afro-American Studies are offered
by the Program in American Studies and the Department
of Afro-American Studies.
- Faculty from a wide range of disciplines -- anthropology, art history, dance,
economics, education, English, film studies, history, government, landscape studies,
Latin American and Latino/a studies, music, religion, sociology and theatre --
teach and do research with a focus on North America (the United States, Canada,
Mexico and the Caribbean).
- Diploma in American Studies Program, a unique one-year
program open only to international students of advanced undergraduate or graduate
standing, and designed primarily, although not exclusively, for those who are teaching
or who plan to teach some aspect of American culture and institutions.
- chatter, an online review,
sponsored by the American Studies Diploma Program, which publishes writing about
the U.S. from outside the U.S.
- Five College programs include the Five
College Certificate in Native American Indian Studies, the Five
College Certificate in Latin American Studies (FCLAS), and the Center
for Crossroads in the Study of the Americas (CISA), which holds an annual
student research symposium every spring.
- Opportunities for student-faculty collaborative research or internships under
the auspices of the Faculty-Led Educational Experiences
Abroad (FLEXA) in Nicaragua, Belize and the Bahamas.

- In addition to the Smith College Consortial Program in Puebla, Mexico, Program
for Mexican Culture and Society in Puebla (PMCSP), and other approved programs
in Costa Rica, Nicaragua,
the Dominican Republic and Turks
and Caicos, students are eligible to apply for a Killam
Fellowship for one semester or a full year of study in a Canadian university.

College, Vassar College, Wellesley College, Wesleyan College, Wheaton College,
or Williams-Mystic Seaport Program. Complete and submit a Twelve College Exchange
Application to the Class
Deans Office.
- Fox-Boorstein International Internship Fellowship supports Smith students
working at summer internships in governmental or non-government/profit or non-profit
international organizations. Administered by the Department of Government.
- Leanna Brown '56 Fellowship, intended
to support Smith students working at summer internships in state or local government
or in organizations (government or non-government) focused on issues of particular
concern to women. Administered by the Department of Government.
- SEA Semester 5-College Scholarship Award provides one merit-based scholarship per SEA semester program. Open to students from Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Amherst College, Hampshire College and UMass-Amherst.
