Academics & Research

  • A minor in African studies, overseen by a committee of faculty that sponsors speakers, films, and other activities related to Africa.
  • Faculty in a wide range of disciplines -- Afro-American studies, anthropology, comparative literature, economics, history, government, and philosophy -- teach and do research with a focus on Africa.
  • A number of African languages are offered through the Mentored Language Program (Swahili) and the Supervised Independent Language Program (Amharic, Twi (Ghana), Wolof (Senegal), Yoruba (Nigeria), Zulu (South Africa), organized by the Five College Center for the Study of World Languages.
  • The Five College African Studies Council offers the Five College Certificate in African Studies, sponsors an annual Five College Africa Day, and maintains a listserv for students interested in African Studies. Other activities promoted by the Council include the Five College African Scholars Program, which sustains links with three dozen scholars in Africa who came to Five Colleges on research fellowships, and the African Studies Review, edited by faculty on the council.

Smith Approved Study Abroad Programs

  • Smith approves a range of programs in Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. Consult with the Office of International Studies to find the program that best meets your academic needs and ambitions.

These funds are administered by the Office for International Study through International Experience Grants (IEG). Grant proposals will be reviewed for eligibility from all funding sources available for IEGs.
