The photos on our Web site reflect some of the countries and geographic regions represented by Smith academic research, students and international study.

The Republic of Zimbabwe is located in the southern part of Africa, between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers. It is bordered by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the southwest, Zambia to the northwest, and Mozambique to the east.

Tian Tan Buddha is the world's tallest outdoor seated bronze Buddha. Completed in 1993, it is located at Ngong Ping, Lantau Island, in Hong Kong. It is surrounded by eight smaller bronze statues, one shown here, representing gods or immortals.

The Eiffel Tower is an iron tower built on the Champ de Mars beside the Seine River in Paris. The tower has become a global icon of France and is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. When completed in 1889, it was the world's tallest tower, and is still the tallest structure in Paris

The domes of a 15th century church in downtown Moscow. Moscow is the largest city in Europe, with its metropolitan area ranking among the largest urban areas in the world. The capital of Russia, Moscow was the capital of the former Soviet Union and of the pre-Imperial Russian state.

A Peruvia bull trinket symbolizes fertility and luck. Peruvian territory was home to the Norte Chico civilization, one of the oldest in the world, and to the Inca Empire, the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century.

The term "Middle East" has a loose definition traditionally encompassing countries or regions in western Asia and parts of North Africa. The Middle East is the geographic origin of three of the world’s major religions -- Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

Torii gates at Fushimi Inari, Kyoto, Japan. Torii mark the entrance to sacred space. Passing underneath a torii on the way to visit a shrine is an act of sanctification and purification before approaching the kami to pray.

The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia is a Roman Catholic church under construction in Barcelona. Construction began in 1882; originally designed by Antoni Gaudi, who worked on the project for over 40 years, the church is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

The Great Temple at Abu Simbel was completed during the reign of Ramesses the Great. Four colossal statues of the pharaoh decorate the facade of the temple, which was relocated in its entirety in the 1960s to a location above the Aswan dam reservoir.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system, composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands. The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in northeast Australia.

Michelangelo's David, sculpted from 1501 to 1504, depicts the young Israelite king David at the moment that he decides to battle with Goliath. Originally set outside the Palazzo della Signoria, the seat of civic government in Florence, the sculpture was moved in 1873 to the Accademia Gallery.
