The Center for International and Intercultural
Studies gathers under one mission and in one centralized and virtual location the
many offices, programs, curricular activities and events that serve the international
interests of students, faculty and the Smith community. At Smith international study
is a core component of our tradition and our identity as a liberal arts college.
We are in many respects a “World College for the World’s Women.” We
teach and offer majors in 13 languages and literatures; we offer more than 400 courses
that address international issues; hundreds of Smith students study abroad each year;
we have our own Smith sponsored Junior Year Abroad programs and consortial programs.
Students majoring in any field are eligible for study abroad opportunities, including
students who major in the sciences and engineering. Our student body includes more
than 200 students from more than 60 countries and many faculty members are engaged
in international research. We bring to campus internationally renowned visiting scholars
and speakers in a broad range of disciplines.
The CIIS Web site functions as a virtual crossroads
for a globalized campus where students, faculty, international visitors and students
can locate information about the various offices for international study and inform
themselves about international events, programs and opportunities on campus.
The CIIS Web site highlights and supports the
college’s international and area studies curriculum and co-curriculum as well
as the study of foreign languages and cultures across the curriculum. Its goal is
to facilitate cross-cultural, cross-disciplinary and cross-national approaches to
learning, teaching and research.
