As a “liberal arts” college, Smith encourages
you to study several academic disciplines, not just one. You get both in-depth education
in your major area of academic interest and a broad education in skills and concepts
useful in any field you pursue after Smith. Employers everywhere say that liberal
arts graduates are valuable employees precisely because they haven’t specialized
too narrowly. Smith women can think clearly, analyze complex situations accurately,
write well, speak persuasively and adapt creatively to new technologies and changing
circumstances. This combination of comprehensive knowledge and flexibility is the
hallmark of a liberal arts education.
At Smith, women learn to succeed and prepare for a life
that may include pursuing multiple careers and fulfilling many commitments, personal
as well as professional. Internships are an increasingly important element of education
for students wishing to advance to graduate school or business positions. The Career
Development Office maintains a list of some 25,000 national and international internships
in a range of fields from art history to zoology. Through Praxis, a program that
provides a one-time stipend to every student, Smith women can participate in summer
internships all over the world.
Smith graduates hold positions of importance and responsibility
in more than 100 countries. The majority of international students begin graduate
study after Smith in any of a wide variety of fields. Smith graduates are accepted
at the finest graduate schools. Among them are Harvard Divinity School, Yale, Columbia,
Gallaudet, Duke and Carnegie Mellon universities and many other top graduate (post-bachelor’s
degree) and professional schools. |
