-had an illegitimate son with "Maria," the woman Nancy's brother (his brother-in-law) was in love with (Lee 58-59)
-"young boy when his father was in prison; his father's fellow prisoners encouraged him in his reading" (Lee 58) (father had been in debtors prison..eventually drank himself to death)
-"'Jem' had a difficult hand-to-mouth childhood but emerged from it to become a public figure of influence and importance" (Lee 58)

CHILDHOOD TEMPERAMENT:
-"His 'apprehension of ghosts' made him sleep with his head under the bedclothes" (Lee 60)
-he said "My imagination also was extremely active and wild" (Lee 60)

-wrote Memoirs for his children between 1819 and 1825: had "three confessions to make: of his sexual aberrations in youth, of his pleasure in his public success, and of his devout conviction of God's special favor" (Lee 58)
-worked in abolition movement (Lee 59-60)
-"became an MP and a Master in Chancery and wrote a famous pamphlet, War in Disguise, which influenced the 1812 War with America" (Lee 59)
