About Us
The Program
In 2001, Smith College launched the Women and Financial Independence Program (WFI) to ensure that Smith students acquire the skills to understand and manage the finances of their personal, professional, and community lives.
Through an introductory workshop for incoming students (Dollars & $ense), regular classes (Financing Life, Principles of Investing, and Interpreting Financial News), a visiting speakers' series (How Do I? The Practical Steps to Financing a Life), an investment club (SCIC), a peer outreach program (POP), a thrift store (SmiTHrift), and a senior culmination workshop (From Backpack to Briefcase) students learn the basics of finance, starting and managing a business, and giving back through philanthropy from the moment they enter Smith until the day they graduate.
The Partners
WFI Partners is a network of Smith alumnae who gather to share ideas on economics, financial markets and investments. At 3-4 events each year, with the help of alumnae experts, they focus on advanced financial concepts. Events may include “financial fitness checkups” so Partners can assess different aspects of their own financial planning.
Becoming a Partner
Each WFI Partner contributes $5,000 annually for membership as a charitable contribution to Smith College in support of the Women and Financial Independence Program. This gift is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
