WEB SITE DESIGN & CONTENT POLICY

The Smith College World Wide Web provides easy access to information and instructional resources on the Internet and fosters collegiality, communication and informed decision-making among faculty, staff and students in support of the learning, teaching, research, scholarship and administration of the institution.

Every departmental unit, faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to publish information consistent with the mission and policies of the institution. Individual members of the faculty and staff who desire to publish their own home pages must link them through their department's Web sites. Student organizations, with proper authorization, can publish Web pages that can be linked from Smith's student organizations home page. Individual students may create their own home pages as well.

The college home page and associated upper-level pages are maintained by the Office of College Relations. The Web Team is responsible for implementing Web policy and campus Web design guidelines, managing Web services, and coordinating campus Web publishing efforts.

The Web Team makes decisions on the format and organization of information on Smith's home page and all associated upper-level pages. All requests for adding departmental information on Smith's home page should be sent to the Webmaster, and final decisions will be made by the Web Team.

Information placed on the Web site plays an important role in developing and maintaining the strong reputation and image of Smith College. It's important that all Web sites conform to Smith's Web design guidelines in order to achieve a consistent look and feel for the college community, and to make the Smith Web site easier to navigate.

All information on the college Web sites must reflect the mission, interest and standards of the college community and must also comply with local, state and federal laws including, but not limited to, copyright, libel and indecency statutes.

The college is not responsible for the content, accuracy, or timeliness of information contained on its servers. Issues of content, accuracy, and timeliness should be directed to the providers of those information pages. Those providers include Smith offices, departments and other units, as well as individual faculty, staff and students.

The college reserves the right to limit or restrict commercial materials on the Web site.

Violation of Web site policies will result in immediate revocation of Smith Web site publishing privileges.
