Wicked new Plays by Smith Playwrights
Northampton, MA - Student playwrights Rebecca Holtz '14J and Allison Ristaino '14 will present two new plays for the Theatre Department's New Playreading Series, advised by Professor Andrea Hairston.
The Kraken and the Selkie, by Holtz, takes place in the crossover between childhood imagination and reality. Simultaneously attempting to change and escape a difficult family life, 7-year-old Andy builds strong relationships within the mythical realms of the ocean. Trying to help the people she loves while learning to live in another reality, Andy is caught between two worlds as she is pulled towards a destiny she only imagined possible. This iteration of the play will be a preview and only Act 1 will be read.
Ristaino's Wicked Lost is a funny, provocative journey through one man's dreams. Taking a new job in a new city is hard enough, but for native Bostonian Mark, life in Chicago seems full of mysteries. Whether trying to understand his quirky new roommate or solving cases with his coworkers, all Mark wants to do is make a difference in the world. That world gets turned upside down, however, when the answers to the mysteries start turning up in his dreams. Some think he’s crazy, some think he’s the criminal, but all Mark cares about is solving the biggest mystery in his life: who killed his mother? Do his dreams hold the answer?
