If your computer is running Windows XP, you may be inadvertently sharing your files with others on the Smith network. This is because some XP computers are shipped with file-sharing enabled by default. This configuration is desirable for many home users, but does not provide sufficient security and privacy for users connected to a campus network.
We recommend that you disable file-sharing on your XP computer, as follows:
- Click on the Start button and select Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel window, double-click on Network Connections.
- In the Network Connections window, right-click on Local Area Connection and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
- In the Local Area Connections Properties window:
- De-select Client for Microsoft Networks.
- De-select File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks.
- Click OK to return to the Network Connections window.
- De-select Client for Microsoft Networks.

- In the My Documents window, under File and Folder Tasks, select Share this Folder.
- In the My Documents Properties window:
- Click on the Sharing tab.
- De-select Share This Folder on the Network.
