PRINTING A DIRECTORY LISTING

Would you like to be able to print a list of all the files and sub-folders inside a folder?

After you complete the one-time procedure described below, you'll be able to right-click on any folder (also called a "directory") in a Windows Explorer window and print a list of all the files and subfolders it contains.

Initial Setup

  1. Go to Start /Programs /Accessories and select Notepad from the flyout menu.

  2. Copy the following three-line DOS program and paste it into the Notepad window:

    dir %1 /-p /o:gn > "%temp%\Dir Listing"
    start /w notepad /p "%temp%\Dir Listing"
    del "%temp%\Dir Listing"

  3. In the Notepad window, go to File /Save and save the file as: dirlist.bat
    For the location in which to save, enter: c:\windows

  4. Open the My Computer icon on your desktop and double-click to open any drive.

  5. Go to Tools /Folder Options and click on the File Types tab.

  6. In the Edit File Type window, click on: (NONE) File Folder, then on the Advanced button.

  7. In the New Action window:

    1. In the Action field, enter: Print Directory Listing

    2. In the Application used... field, enter: c:\windows\dirlist.bat

    3. When you're done, your window should look like the one below.



    4. Click OK to close this window and all the other windows.

  8. You're all done with the initial setup and won't have to do this part again.

Printing a Folder/Directory
Listing

  1. Within My Computer or Windows Explorer, navigate until you can see the name of the folder whose contents you'd like to print.

  2. Right-click on the folder name and choose Print Directory Listing from the pop-up menu.

  3. A DOS window will appear briefly. If it doesn't close by itself:

    1. Right-click on the blue title bar and select Properties from the menu. 

    2. Click on the Program tab, then in the Close on Exit check box.

    3. Click OK, then close the DOS window.

  4. Next time you print a directory listing, the DOS window will close automatically.
