PRINTING A DIRECTORY LISTING
Would you like to be able to print a list of all the files and sub-folders inside a folder?
After you complete the one-time procedure described below, you'll be able to right-click on any folder (also called a "directory") in a Windows Explorer window and print a list of all the files and subfolders it contains.
Initial Setup
Printing a Folder/Directory Listing
- Go to Start /Programs /Accessories and select Notepad from the flyout menu.
- Copy the following three-line DOS program and paste it into the Notepad window:
dir %1 /-p /o:gn > "%temp%\Dir Listing"
start /w notepad /p "%temp%\Dir Listing"
del "%temp%\Dir Listing"
- In the Notepad window, go to File /Save and save the file as: dirlist.bat
For the location in which to save, enter: c:\windows
- Open the My Computer icon on your desktop and double-click to open any drive.
- Go to Tools /Folder Options and click on the File Types tab.
- In the Edit File Type window, click on: (NONE) File Folder, then on the Advanced button.
- In the New Action window:
- In the Action field, enter: Print Directory Listing
- In the Application used... field, enter: c:\windows\dirlist.bat
- When you're done, your window should look like the one below.

- Click OK to close this window and all the other windows.
- In the Action field, enter: Print Directory Listing
- You're all done with the initial setup and won't have to do this part again.
Printing a Folder/Directory Listing
- Within My Computer or Windows Explorer, navigate until you can see the name of the folder whose contents you'd like to print.
- Right-click on the folder name and choose Print Directory Listing from the pop-up menu.
- A DOS window will appear briefly. If it doesn't close by itself:
- Right-click on the blue title bar and select Properties from the menu.
- Click on the Program tab, then in the Close on Exit check box.
- Click OK, then close the DOS window.
- Right-click on the blue title bar and select Properties from the menu.
- Next time you print a directory listing, the DOS window will close automatically.
