MANAGING YOUR SMITH PASSWORDS

Has this ever happened to you?

My password is still working for Smith Mail, but I can't log on to the networked computer in my office or connect to Moodle! What's going on?

Why does this happen?

Smith Mail passwords don't expire on their own, but your Smith network password automatically expires 180 days after each reset.

What can I do?

One week before your network password is set to expire, you will receive a password-expiration alert from ITS. If you miss this message or don't reset your network password within the specified time, your password will simply expire. When that happens, you will no longer be able to log in to Moodle or the Smith network or use library resources from off-campus, and you'll have to contact the USC for help.

The good news is that you don't have to wait for the alert message to reset your network password. As long as your password is still working, you can go to the following web page any time you want to reset it (and automatically reset the expiration period to 180 days):

http://www.smith.edu/changepass

Note that this page also lets you reset your Smith Mail password to match your network password, so you have fewer passwords to remember over all.

Remember! You need a valid network username and password to:

  • Log on to networked computers
  • Connect to Moodle
  • Access library resources from off-campus
  • Register a new wireless device on the Smith network
  • Transfer files to and from your network drive (H: drive)
  • Connect to the Sophia web server (if you have a Sophia account)

For Smith Mail, use your network username and password, or your separate Smith Mail password if you haven't set it to match your network password.

Note that if you are logging in on a generic Gmail login screen (one that does not have the Smith logo on it), you must add @smith.edu after your username.

BannerWeb is different.

For BannerWeb, log in with your 9-digit Smith ID number and your BannerWeb PIN.

As long as your PIN is still working, you can reset it at any time by logging in to BannerWeb and going to the Personal Information/Change PIN screen. Your PIN expires 180 days after each reset.

If you forget your BannerWeb PIN, you can enter your Smith ID number and click Forgot PIN. Answer your two security questions correctly and you will be able to reset your PIN.

If you forget your answers:

  • Students: Bring your Smith ID card to the User Support Center in Stoddard 23 for a reset.

  • Faculty & Staff: Call Human Resources at x2260 for a reset.

If you have any questions, please call the USC at x4487.
