MANAGING YOUR FILES IN MOODLE
What is your file space?
What can you do in your file space?
Giving students access to files
Each Moodle course has its own “file space” where the instructor can store files. Only the instructors and teaching assistants can access these files; students cannot. To give students access to a file, the instructor must create a link to that file on the main course page.
To access your file space, click on the Files link in your Administration block.

Remember, students cannot access any of the files in your file space unless you link to the files from your course Moodle page.
Giving students access to files
Most users give students access to files by posting them on their Moodle page using the "Upload a file" option. This option is actually a shortcut; what's happening in the background is this:
- Moodle uploads the file from your computer into the file space for your Moodle course.
- Moodle creates a link on your course page to the file, allowing students to access it.
You can allow students to access files in your file space by creating links to them on your course page.
If you've already uploaded a file into your file space, here's how to add it to your page:
- Click Add a resource > Link to a file or web page.
- Use the "Choose or upload a file" button to view the files in your file space.
- Locate the file to which you want to link, then click the Choose link all the way to its right.
If you'd like to give your students access to multiple files without linking to each one, you can use the Display a directory option under Add a resource to show a whole folder of files to your students.
