COPYING COURSE DATA TO A NEW COURSE
Did you know that you can copy your own course data from one semester's Moodle course to another? (As always, if you do not feel comfortable doing this on your own, please ask your Moodle administrator, Caroline Moore, to move the data for you.)
Please note that these instructions will move all resources (files, forums, etc) but will NOT move any student data, such as forum posts or submitted assignments.

Restoring backed-up data to a new course
- Go to the Moodle page for the new course.
- Make sure the new course has the same number of visible topic/week sections as the old course. If it doesn't, click on Settings in the Administration block and change the "Number of weeks/topics" setting to match the old course, then click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.
Please do not skip this step or your materials will not copy correctly!
- In the Administration block, click Import.
- From the "Courses I have taught" drop-down menu, choose the old course from which you would like to import data. Click the "Use this course" button.
- On the "Import course data: Coursename" page, scroll to the bottom and click Continue. You do not need to change any of the options on this page.
- On the next page, allow Moodle to finish restoring the course (this may take a few minutes), then click the Continue button at the bottom.

Moodle also has a method for making a backup of an entire Moodle course page, or parts of a Moodle course page. This is useful for saving a backup copy of all of your materials or for moving only certain parts of your Moodle course page into a new course. (For example, this is how you would move a single quiz into another Moodle course.)
- Go into the course that currently has the data in it. In the Administration block (usually located on the lower left side of the course page), click on Backup.
- To back up all of the course data, leave everything checked. If you want to back up only certain items, check only the items you'd like to back up.
- At the bottom of the page, you will see two small drop-down menus.
If a Metacourse option appears, change it to no.
Course files and Site files should remain set to yes.
Click the Continue button.
- On the next page, simply scroll to the bottom and click Continue.
- On the next page, the backup is actually created. This may take a minute. When the page is done loading, click Continue at the bottom.
- Your course data backup has now been created. Moodle will take you to your file space, where you will see a file whose name starts with "backup" and ends with the date and time at which the backup was created.
- Find the backup file with your data in it. (If you just created the backup file, you should already be looking at it. If not, go to the course you backed up and click on Files in the Administration block. In your file space, click on the backupdata folder and look for your backup file.)
- Click on the file. You will be prompted to save it to your computer. Do so!
- In Moodle, go to the course page for your new course, where you'd like to copy the data.
- In the Administration block, click on Files. In your file space, click on the Upload a File button.
- Browse to the saved backup file and upload it to the new course.
- Click on the Restore link to the right of your backup file. On the next screen, click the Yes button.
- At the bottom of the next page, click Continue.
- On the next screen, set the "Restore to" drop-down menu to "existing course, adding data to it" and click Continue at the bottom of the page.
- Click the "Restore this Course Now" button.
- The next page may take a few minutes to unload, since it is unzipping the backup file. Once it is finished loading, click Continue at the bottom of the page.
- Moodle will take you back to your course page. You should now see all your resources on the new course page.
