Upgrading an FCAP MAC From Leopard To Snow Leopard
This document explains the upgarde procedure for Staff and Faculty (FCAP) computers from OS X Leopard (10.5.x) to Snow Leopard (10.6.x). This is not the only way to upgrade a Mac, it reflects the recommendations of ITS. This document applies to iMacs, MacBooks, MacBook Pros and Airs.
Please note: FCAP upgrades to Snow Leopard are by request only. Please contact the User Support Center, x4487 to make a request. Note: Staff & Faculty approved to upgrade to Snow Leopard can borrow an external hard drive for back up purposes.
The safest, most-reliable way to upgrade to Snow Leopard is to back up user data to an external drive, reimage the machine using the latest image and then restore the saved data.
Check to ensure the computer meets the minimum requirements for upgrading
- Intel Processor; NO Power PC processor
- 2gb of memory; 4gb preferred
- 5gb to 10gb of extra hard drive space
Check the compatibility of installed software
- Check for a list of applications and software known not to work with Snow Leopard
- Make sure new printer (or other peripheral) drivers are available for devices being used

Before any upgrade, it is important to perform a backup.
ITS recommends using either Time Machine (which is included with OS 10.5 Leopard), or Carbon Copy Cloner to create a full backup of the system. These programs make a complete image, or clone, of the system to a bootable external hard drive. If something should go wrong with the upgrade, these images can be used to completely restore the hard drive.
You can download the latest version of Carbon Copy Cloner from Bombich Software. Time Machine is included with Mac OS X Leopard but not in previous versions of the Mac operating system.
