INTERNET BROWSERS
The list below shows the recommended
browsers for computers and operating systems used at Smith. The specific versions
shown are compatible with Smith's web-based systems, such as Moodle, BannerWeb, and eBill.
Note that BannerWeb is not currently compatible with Mozilla Firefox 4.x, Internet Explorer 9.x, or Google Chrome. Therefore we recommend that users choose a preferred browser and keep it fully up to date, and reserve an older version of a less preferred browser for use with BannerWeb. Versions that work with BannerWeb are listed below:
Windows XP, Vista, or 7:
Macintosh OS 10.x:
- Apple Safari
- Mozilla Firefox 3.6+
Click on any browser name to go to the download site for that browser. Some
browsers are available in multiple languages, so be sure to install the correct language
version. For Internet Explorer, be sure to also install the recommended security updates.
When you begin the download, if you are asked whether you want to run or save the file, choose Run. If
you are later asked whether you want to run the installation software, choose Run again.
Enabling Javascript in your Browser NEW!
You may need to enable Javascript in your browser to access web-based media and applications such as eBill and BannerWeb. This document provides instructions for a wide range of Windows and Mac browsers.
Using RSS Feeds with Internet Explorer 6
Since Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) does not have built-in support for RSS feeds, you must install an external RSS feed reader in order to view and subscribe to RSS feeds.
Saving and Restoring Browser Bookmarks
This document explains how to save your browser bookmarks to your H: drive (or another location),
so you can copy them to a different computer later.
Disabling
Password-Completion and Clearing Saved Passwords
If more than one person uses the same computer, it is important to disable password-completion
and clear passwords in browsers used to access web-based systems such as BannerWeb. This
document contains instructions for performing these steps in Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox,
and Netscape.
Changing Your Default Browser
Trying to change your default internet browser from Netscape Communicator to Internet Explorer,
or vice versa, can be a very frustrating experience. The secret is to reenable the default-checking
routine, as described in this document. Once that's done, you can answer "yes" the
next time the browser of your choice asks if you want it to become your default.
Problems with Parasiteware on Windows Computers
"Parasiteware" is unwanted software that installs itself on your computer when you download
files from the Internet. It may track the websites you visit and the software you install, while also
causing problems with your network connection. This document explains how to detect and remove it.
