CREATING A GROUPWISE REMOTE MAILBOX ON A PC

This document explains how to create a "Remote Mailbox" on the hard drive of a Windows computer, where you can store your GroupWise email messages and personal address book.

With a Remote Mailbox, graduating seniors or other people leaving Smith can access their saved messages and addresses even after their Smith accounts have been deleted. Other users may find a Remote Mailbox helpful if they are traveling to a location that has no Internet access, but they still need to access their stored email.

Note that you must have the GroupWise desktop client for Windows installed on the computer where you want to set up your Remote Mailbox. (If you don't have the Windows desktop client on your computer, click here to go to the Smith software download site.)

Note that it's a good idea to delete as many unnecessary email messages, attachments, and address book entries as you can before you begin the Remote Mailbox procedure, to avoid overloading your hard drive.

There are two steps required to complete the procedure:

  1. Download all desired mailbox items to a Remote Mailbox on your hard drive.
  2. Create a desktop shortcut that allows you to access your Remote Mailbox.

If you receive new email after completing these two steps, you may also wish to update your stored items.

Downloading Items to Your Hard Drive

  1. Start up the GroupWise desktop client.

  2. From the main menu, select Tools, then Hit the Road.

  3. Enter your GroupWise password, then click OK.

  4. The "Hit the Road" Wizard will open. In the first screen, click on This Machine, then Next.

  5. In the next screen, enter the following pathname to your Remote Mailbox directory:

    c:\gwremote

    then click Next.

  6. The first time you run this procedure, you will see the message

Cannot find your Remote Mailbox Folder 'c:\gwremote'. Do you want GroupWise to create the folder?'

    Click Yes.

  7. In the Update Your Remote Mailbox screen, select the items you want to copy to your Remote Mailbox. Be sure to de-select "System Address Book" and "Rules".

  8. Click on the Advanced button.

  9. In the Retrieve Options window, in the box that specifies "days before" the current date, replace the default value of 5 with 2000. Click OK.

  10. Click on the Size Limits tab and select Get contents regardless of size.

  11. Click Finish.

  12. You will see the message:

Do you want to use the Online Mailbox password to access your Remote Mailbox?

Click Yes if you want your Remote Mailbox to be password-protected with your regular GroupWise password. Click No if you want to be able to open it without a password.

  13. Your mail will download to your local hard drive.

  14. Close GroupWise.

Creating the Remote Mailbox Shortcut on your Desktop

  1. Right-click on any blank spot on your Windows desktop. From the pop-up menu, select New, then Shortcut.

  2. In the Command Line box, enter:

    C:\NOVELL\GROUPWISE\GRPWISE.EXE /pr-c:\gwremote /@u-?

There should be a space after .EXE and a space after /pr-c:\gwremote. There should be no other spaces in this line. (Don't forget the dashes!)

  3. Click Next.

  4. Enter a name for the shortcut, such as Standalone GW, and click Finish.

  5. Use this shortcut to access your stored GroupWise mail.
