DAILY SENDING LIMITS
Google imposes limits on the total number of messages that can be sent from an individual account each day, and on the unique and total number of recipients for all messages sent from that account each day.
If an account exceeds any of the limits below, Google assumes it is being used to send spam and may disable the account for up to 72 hours. If you are worried about exceeding any of these limits, please continue using GroupWise to send messages to large groups until further notice.
Read the points below to be sure you understand how Google counts recipients:
- An external recipient is any email address that does not end in @smith.edu.
- The total count of recipients includes all addresses in the To, Cc, and Bcc fields.
- POP/IMAP users: Note the 100-recipient upper limit for messages sent via SMTP.
| Limit Type | Number |
| Total messages sent per day | 2000 |
| Total internal + external recipients per message Maximum EXTERNAL recipients per message |
2000 500 |
| Total recipients per message sent via SMTP by POP/IMAP users | 100 |
| Unique internal + external recipients per day (5 messages sent to the same 10 recipients count as 10 unique recipients) Unique EXTERNAL recipients per day |
3000 2000 |
| Total internal + external recipients per day (5 messages sent to any 10 recipients count as 50 recipients) Total EXTERNAL recipients per day |
10,000 3000 |

Google Groups
Sometime after the migration to Smith Mail is complete, users will be able to start using Google Groups to send messages to large groups without exceeding the daily sending limits. That's because a message sent to a Google Group is counted as one message sent to one recipient, no matter how many addresses the group contains.
More information about Google Groups will be coming soon.
