MAKING SMITH MAIL YOUR DEFAULT EMAIL CLIENT
Click on any browser below for instructions on making Smith Mail the default client to open email links on web pages viewed in that browser.

Mac OS X: All browsers
- In Google Chrome, go to Smith Mail: http://mail.smith.edu
- If you see a toolbar with Allow Smith Mail (mail.smith.com) to open all email links?, click on Use Smith Mail and you're all done.
- If you do not see the option to Use Smith Mail:
- Click on the wrench icon in the top right of the Chrome window (shown below) and choose Settings from the drop-down menu.

- At the bottom of the Settings page, click on Show Advanced Settings.
- In the Privacy area at the top, click Content Settings.
- On the Content Settings page, under Handlers, make sure Allow sites to ask to become default handlers for protocols is selected.
- Click Manage Handlers.
- If Type: mailto appears under Active protocol handler, select Smith College Mail (or Gmail) as the Site and you're all done.
- If Type: mailto appears under Ignored protocol handlers, move your mouse cursor over the entry and click the x that appears on its right.
- If Type: mailto now appears under Active protocol handlers, select Smith College Mail (or Gmail) as the Site.
- If Type: mailto does not appear under Active protocol handlers, close Chrome.
- The next time you open Chrome, you should be given the choice to Allow Smith Mail to open all email links, as described in step 2 above.
- Click on the wrench icon in the top right of the Chrome window (shown below) and choose Settings from the drop-down menu.
- Go to Tools, then Options.
- Click the Applications button.
- Scroll down to mailto and select it.
- Choose Use Gmail from the drop-down menu.
- Click OK.
- Go to Tools, Internet Options, Programs tab.
- Click the Set Programs button.
- Click the Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program link.
- Scroll to the end and select MAILTO from the list.
- Click the Change program button and select Google Apps.
- Click OK.
Mac OS X: All Browsers
To make Smith Mail (Gmail) your default web email client:
- Download and install the Gmail Notifier for Mac.
- Open the Gmail Notifier.
- Click the Mail icon on the menu bar and go to Preferences.
- Select the Gmail tab, then choose Gmail from the Compose mail drop-down menu.
Once Gmail is set as the default email client, a Gmail Compose window should open when you click on any email link displayed in any web browser on your Mac.
