ACCESSING FILES ON YOUR H: DRIVE FROM A NON-NETWORKED COMPUTER

It's easy to transfer files between your network drive (called your "H: drive" on a PC, "home directory" on a Macintosh) and a computer in your residence house or home. All you need is an Internet connection.

Once you're connected to the Internet, you can use use a browser to transfer files between your H: drive and your local computer. Or, if you prefer, you can use secure file transfer software such as Core FTP LE for Windows or Fetch for Macintosh.

    Examples:   .ajones.a-d.stu.ac.sc

                        .kjones.k-m.stu.ac.sc
                        .njones.n-z.stu.ac.sc

    Faculty
    Format:  .username.[division].fac.ac.sc

    Example:   .bjones.div1.fac.ac.sc

    Staff Format:  .username.[department id].ad.sc

    Example:   .cjones.adm.dc.ad.sc

Note:  If you are unsure of your network context, contact the User Support Center at x4487.

  4. The next window should show you a list of all the files and folders on your H: drive.

  5. To transfer a file from your H: drive to your C: drive, navigate to the file, then drag it to your desktop, on into a My Computer or Windows Explorer window.

  6. To transfer a file from your C: drive to your H: drive, locate the file in a My Computer or Windows Explorer window and select it, or select a file on your desktop, and drag it into the browser window that shows your H: drive.

Troubleshooting Login Problems

If the file transfer program you're using doesn't let you see your Home directory:
  • In the Username field, make sure you included the period (.) before your username and the correct context for your account.

  • In the Password field, make sure you used the password for your Novell network account. Students, this is the same password you use to access GroupWise and the computers in Smith computer labs and classrooms.
Note: If you have never logged into your Novell account and changed your password from the initial one you were given, you are allowed only 4 grace logins before your account is temporarily disabled. This means that you'll be able to use the FTP process 4 times, then it will stop working without explanation.

To avoid this problem, log on to the network in an office or resource center using your initial password before you begin using FTP. When you see a message that says you have only a few grace logins left and asks whether you want to change your password now, click Yes and proceed to reset your password.

For more information about transferring files, see other File Transfer documents on TARA, or contact the User Support Center at x4487.
