How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 8
Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) and Cognos 8.3 are not compatible at this time. The recommended browser for Cognos is Internet Explorer 7 (IE7).
Cognos users are getting the following error message when attempting to login to
Cognos 8.3 if they have IE8 installed:

If you encounter this error, you will need to uninstall IE8.
Steps for Uninstalling Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP
To uninstall Internet Explorer 8 (Windows XP), follow these steps:
- Close all programs.
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel. (Some computers are configured so that you
will have to go to Settings then to Control Panel.)
- Click Add or Remove Programs.
- In the list of currently installed programs, click Windows Internet Explorer 8, and then
click Remove.
Note: If Windows Internet Explorer 8 does not appear in the list of installed updates, try
the Alternative Steps listed below.
- Follow the instructions to uninstall Internet Explorer 8.
- When the uninstall program is finished, restart your computer.
- Check your Internet Explorer 7 settings.
To verify that your earlier version of Internet Explorer is restored:
- After you restart your computer, open Internet Explorer.
- Click About Internet Explorer on the Help menu. If Internet Explorer 6 or 7 appears in the About Internet Explorer dialog box, then you are finished with this article.
- If Internet Explorer 8 is not removed, or you cannot open Internet Explorer 6 or 7, you can try the Alternative Steps below or you can contact User Support at extension 4487 (4ITS).
Alternative Steps for Uninstalling Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP
- Carefully select and then copy the following command:
%windir%\ie8\spuninst\spuninst.exe
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type Cmd.exe, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click inside the Cmd.exe window, and then click Paste to paste the command that you copied in step #1.
- Press ENTER to uninstall Internet Explorer 8.
- When the uninstall program is finished, restart your computer.
