ABOUT COGNOS REPORTNET

What is Cognos ReportNet?

Cognos ReportNet is Smith College's new web based solution for creating and managing reports. It is a campus-wide reporting tool that can produce a broad range of business reports in various formats (HTML, PDF, Excel) directly from your web browser. The report data is from the Banner ODS (Operational Data Store). Banner ODS is a copy of the Banner real-time production database, reorganized specifically for efficient report access.

For more detailed ReportNet product information, see the Cognos ReportNet Fact Sheet.

Types of Cognos Users

There are two types of Cognos Users at Smith College. The majority of users are "Cognos Consumers" These users can log into Cognos and run reports. The other type is a "Cognos Report Author". Report Authors can create reports and queries for their departments.

Will I need special software to run Cognos ReportNet?

No, for all end users there is no software loaded on the desktop because the application is web based. It only requires a web browser to run.

How do I access Cognos ReportNet

Open your web browser and go to:

https://cognos.smith.edu/cognos83/

Log in using your Groupwise ID and password. Cognos Consumers will be brought direclty to their list of available reports. Cognos Report Authors will be brought to this "portal".

What's the difference between Report Studio and Query Studio?

Both Report Studio and Query Studio can be accessed from within the Cognos Connection web portal. Report Studio is used to create more sophisticated reports and charts with complex prompts and filters. Query Studio is used to create ad hoc queries and simple list reports.
