SECURE SHELL CLIENT & SECURE FILE TRANSFER FOR PRODDBSM USERS


Secure Shell Client and Secure File Transfer are two programs developed by SSH Communications Security to give mission-critical systems and databases greater protection against electronic attacks.

Secure Shell Client is a secure terminal emulation program that replaces PowerTerm for PRODDBSM users. Secure File Transfer is a secure file transfer program that replaces WS-FTP95 for PRODDBSM users.

Bessie users: These instructions will not work for Bessie. Please continue to use PowerTerm to connect to Bessie.

Installing the Secure Shell Client and Secure FTP

  1. Click on Start, then Run.

  2. In the Run window, enter: \\Stuff

  3. Double-click on Data, then UserFiles, then Secure Shell.

  4. Double-click on SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9.exe to launch the installer.

  5. In the Welcome to SSH window, click Next.

  6. In the License Agreement window, click Yes.

  7. In the Destination Location window, click Next.

  8. In the Program Folder window, click Next.

  9. In the Select Components window, click Next.

  10. In the Check Setup Information window, click Next.

  11. The program will begin copying files. When it completes, click Finish.

  12. Close the \\stuff\data\UserFiles\Secure Shell window.

You should now see two new icons on your desktop: SSH Secure Shell Client and SSH Secure File Transfer.

Logging On to Secure Shell Client for the First Time
Secure Shell Client is a terminal emulation program that replaces PowerTerm for PRODDBS users.

  1. Double-click on the SSH Secure Shell Client icon to launch the terminal emulator program. The main Secure Shell window will appear.




  2. Click on the QuickConnect button.

  3. In the Host Name field, enter: proddbsm.smith.edu

  4. In the User Name field, enter your PRODDBSM username.

  5. Leave the Port Number as 22.

  6. In the Authentication Method field, choose <Profile Settings>. This will allow you to save your connection information.

  7. Click on the Connect button.

  8. If a Host Identification window opens, click Yes.

  9. Enter your PRODDBSM password, then press OK.

  10. When the Add Profile window opens, enter a new profile name, then click on Add to Profiles.

    Note: If the window disappears before you have a chance to do this, click on the Profiles button, select Add Profile, and enter a name for your profile.

The connection information you entered has now been saved.


Next, set up the SSH license agreement.

  1. In the SSH Secure Shell Client, open the Help menu and select Import License File.

  2. In the Look In drop-down, select Network Neighborhood or My Network Places.

  3. Double-click on Entire Network. Windows XP users, double-click on Netware Services.

  4. Double-click on Netware Servers. You may experience a delay while all the servers are listed.

  5. Double click on STUFF, then DATA, then UserFiles, then Secure Shell.

  6. Double-click on LICENSE.DAT.

  7. Click on OK.

Congratulations! You have installed the SSH Secure Shell Client on your computer and set up your first profile. You may now access PRODDBSM as you normally would. When logging on in the future, follow the instructions below.


Logging On in Subsequent Sessions

  1. Double-click on the SSH Secure Shell Client icon to launch the terminal emulator program.

  2. Click on the Profiles button located to the right of the QuickConnect button in the SSH toolbar.

  3. Choose the profile name you set up earlier.

  4. Enter your password, then click OK.

Changing Secure Shell Client Display Settings

To change colors:

  1. Click on Edit, then Settings.

  2. In the Global Settings section on the left under the Appearance section, click on Colors.

  3. You can now click on each option to customize your colors.


To change fonts:

  1. Click on Edit, then Settings.

  2. In the Global Settings section on the left under the Appearance section, click on Font.

  3. To make the text larger, change the Font Size setting to 12 or 14. You can also choose a different font.

Using SSH Secure File Transfer (SFTP) to Transfer Files

Secure File Transfer is a file transfer program that replaces WS-FTP95 for PRODDBSM users.

First, configure SFTP to connect to PRODDBSM:

  1. Double-click on the SSH Secure File Transfer icon on your desktop. The Secure File Transfer window will appear.



  2. In the SFTP window, click on the Quick Connect button.

  3. In the Connect to Remote Host window, enter:

    Hostname: proddbsm.smith.edu
    Username: [your Banner username]
    Port Number: 22

    then click Connect.

  4. In the Enter Password window, enter your PRODDBSM password and click OK.

  5. The SSH Secure File Transfer window will open, showing your local files and folders on the left side of the screen and your remote files and folders on the right side.

In future SFTP sessions, you can quickly connect to PRODDBSM by clicking on the Profiles button and choosing proddbsm from the drop-down menu.


Next, set up the SSH license agreement. (Note: If you have already set up the license in the Secure Shell Client, you can skip these steps.)

  1. In the SSH Secure File Transfer program, open the Help menu and select Import License File.

  2. In the Look In drop-down, select Network Neighborhood or My Network Places.

  3. Double-click on Entire Network. Windows XP users, double-click on Netware Services.

  4. Double-click on Netware Servers. You may experience a delay while all the servers are listed.

  5. Double click on STUFF, then DATA, then UserFiles, then Secure Shell.

  6. Double-click on LICENSE.DAT.

  7. Click on OK.


Uploading files to PRODDBSM

To upload files from your local or network drive to your PRODDBSM directory:

  1. On the right side of the File Transfer window, navigate to the PRODDBSM folder where you wish to place the files.

  2. On the left side of the File Transfer window, navigate to the folder that holds the file or files you wish to transfer.

  3. To upload a single file, right-click on the filename and choose Upload from the pop-up menu. The file will be transferred immediately.

  4. To upload multiple files at once, hold down the Control key while you click on all the files of interest, then right-click on any selected file and choose Upload from the pop-up menu. All the selected files will be transferred immediately.


Downloading files from PRODDBSM to your local computer

To download files from your PRODDBSM directory to your local or network drive:

  1. On the left side of the File Transfer window, navigate to the folder on your local or network drive where you wish to place the files.

  2. On the right side of the File Transfer window, navigate to the PRODDBSM folder that holds the file or files you wish to transfer.

  3. To download a single file, right-click on the filename and choose Download from the pop-up menu. The file will be transferred immediately.

  4. To upload multiple files at once, hold down the Control key while you click on all the files of interest, then right-click on any selected file and choose Download from the pop-up menu. All the selected files will be transferred immediately.


Ending your SFTP session

When you have finished transferring files, click on the Disconnect button in the toolbar.
