Crystal Ziniewicz

SSEP Residential Director

Crystal Ziniewicz first experienced Smith College during the summer of 2000, when she participated in the SSEP as a rising high school junior. Her experience that summer was both memorable and inspiring. Not only did it solidify her passion for science, but it also turned out to be just the beginning of her relationship with Smith College.  Crystal studied at Smith as an undergraduate, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Art in Biochemistry in 2006. Crystal attributes those four years to increasing her strength and confidence as a leader, as well as providing her with worldly experience and life-long friendships. She participated in the Smith Junior Year Abroad program, spending an entire year studying history and art history in London, England. During her senior year, she worked as a Head Resident of a campus house, building community within the house and providing support and safety to 75 residents.  Following graduation in 2006, Crystal moved to Boston, Massachusetts, and took on the role of Residential Counselor and Teaching Assistant at New England’s top residential treatment facility for severely troubled adolescent girls. Working specifically with girls with histories of fire-setting and sexual aggression, Crystal served as a positive role model, teaching them healthy coping skills so that they could be reintegrated back into society. Crystal returned to Smith in 2007 and is currently obtaining her Masters of Science in Biology, while serving as a Teaching Fellow in various laboratory courses. She will be attending UMASS Amherst starting Fall 2009, where she will obtain her Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology.

The summer of 2009 will mark Crystal’s sixth consecutive summer with the SSEP.  She interned for the Women and Exercise course for two summers before taking on the role of Assistant Residential Director for one summer. This will be her fourth and final summer as the SSEP Residential Director.
