Dr. Gail Scordilis

Director of Educational Outreach

Gail E. Scordilis, Director of Educational Outreach and Adjunct Associate Professor of Biology at Smith College, holds a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Massachusetts and a B.A. from Smith College. In leading Smith College’s outreach efforts, Dr. Scordilis guides outreach programs and community partnerships that foster strategic relationships, linking the research and teaching interests of Smith faculty and students to the needs, goals and opportunities of schools and communities. She has developed innovative programs that address the challenges of overcoming stereotypes and attracting, encouraging and retaining students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), establishing the Smith College Summer Science & Engineering Program for high school girls, promoting the advancement of nearly 1400 young women from around the globe in STEM study, and the Smith College Summer Institute for Educators, a workshop addressing issues in STEM education for hundreds of middle and high school educators. Scordilis directed a GTE-funded project, Designing Engineering for Girls, illuminating factors that affect high school girls’ decisions to pursue engineering study and is a co-principal investigator of the ENGINEERING & EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP: a Learner-Centered Approach toward Quantitative Excellence, a GE-funded program designed to positively impact the attitudes, retention rates, career choices, skills and knowledge of K-16 students in engineering. The recipient of numerous grant awards in support of fostering the connection between the college and the community, Scordilis’ work has been highlighted in reports by the National Council for Research on Women, and the Association for Women in Science, and she is a recipient of the YWCA Woman of Achievement award.

Dr. Scordilis has been directing the SSEP since 1991, and looks forward with excitement to welcoming a new group of high school students to the Smith campus each July. As a woman scientist and the mother of two daughters, Dr. Scordilis’ commitment to building a high quality summer program that nurtures the talents of aspiring young women is deep and sincere. Outside of work, Dr. Scordilis is an avid tennis player and fan of the Boston Red Sox, and cherishes spending time with her daughters Eleni and Toula, husband Stan (also a scientist) and their chocolate lab Fudge.
