Administrative Assistant, Office of Educational Outreach
Carla M. Cooke holds a bachelors degree in Biological Sciences from Smith College's Ada Comstock Scholars Program (2001) and a masters degree from the Conway School of Landscape Design (1992). Since 2004, Carla has assisted in the administration of the Summer Science and Engineering Program, as well as myriad other programs and projects of the Office of Educational Outreach. In addition to undergraduate internships at the college, she has provided administrative support and event planning services for many programs and departments at Smith. Along with positions in the Office of Institutional Research, the Tibetan Studies in India Program, the Women In Technology International Invent Center, and several academic departments, she served as a research assistant for the Smith College Engineering and Education Partnership; this included assessment work in SSEP courses in 2002 and 2003. Before coming to Smith in 1997, she was office manager, conservation land planner, and land stewardship specialist for a consulting firm and a New York state land trust.
Carla's experience includes office, data, and financial management, as well as writing, editing, research, and event coordination. Her experience and expertise, combined with her strong organizational and communication skills, have proven vital in her work with Educational Outreach, especially in the SSEP. She knows the college from many perspectives (student, alumna, staff, neighbor) and is familiar with its systems—she's a well-known "go-to" person for questions and problem-solving around campus. Her attention to detail and her responsiveness to individuals' needs help make the SSEP run smoothly each summer; her behind-the-scenes work is essential. She holds a strong commitment to women's education and is inspired by the participants, faculty, and staff of the SSEP. She is delighted to be part of the team, help introduce high school girls to Smith, and support a program that can be so life-changing for young women. In her spare time, she enjoys ensemble singing, playing squash, reading, writing, being outdoors, and spending time with friends.
