In addition to doing great science, girls in the SSEP make new friends and get a taste of college life. Smith’s beautiful 147-acre campus has traditional ivy-covered buildings, magnificent gardens, and a pond named Paradise. 2008 SSEP participants will live together in Laura Scales and Franklin King Houses along with SSEP interns, who serve as supervisors, advisers and teaching/research assistants, and the SSEP residential director, who is in charge of all aspects of students’ residential life. All meals are served in the house dining room.
SSEP participants get a taste of independent living, along with caring supervision and guidance from the SSEP residential director and interns. At four in the afternoon, when the day's classes are over, participants can choose take part in organized sports (volleyball, tennis etc.), hang out with their friends, visit the Smith athletic facility, gym or pool (Scales and King Houses, where the students will be staying, also have their own workout room and computer labs available to SSEP students), or join activities ranging from artistic (pottery, painting, music ensemble) to just plain fun (gumboot dancing, drumming, scavenger hunt and karaoke). Smith’s superb athletic facilities include two gymnasiums, an indoor pool, indoor and outdoor track and tennis facilities, squash courts, horseback riding arena, dance studio, croquet court and fitness center. Weekend activities include local arts festivals, museums and theatrical performances. Participants also enjoy walks through local nature preserves, movie nights and the annual SSEP talent show. Shops, restaurants and movie theaters are also located within easy walking distance from campus in downtown Northampton. The program fee covers the costs of all organized program activities and field trips.
