The Smith Summer Science and Engineering Program for High School Girls

HOW TO APPLY, COSTS AND FINANCIAL AID

The 2008 SSEP is open to academically talented girls who will enter grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 in fall 2008. Enrollment in the program is limited to ensure the quality of the academic experience. The SSEP has a selective admissions process, based on academic performance in middle and/or high school, a written essay and a teacher recommendation. The program welcomes applications from students with all levels of previous science training. Students need not have taken advanced science courses but must have a strong record of academic achievement, a high level of motivation and a willingness to explore.

Students in a Chemistry Lab

In all of its programming, Smith is committed to reaching a diverse student body. More than half the participants in the 2007 SSEP identified themselves as students of color.

The SSEP has two deadlines for application: an early admission date of March 1 and a regular admission date of May 1. All complete applications received before these dates will be evaluated. Applicants are encouraged to apply early as the program has a long waiting list. Applications to the SSEP will not be reviewed until all materials are received. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all materials necessary for a complete application (see list below) are received by the Office of Educational Outreach.

To apply to the 2008 SSEP, please mail the following:

Completed SSEP Application Form (pdf)

Your written essay (1-2 typed, double-spaced pages)--see essay instructions on the SSEP application form

Completed Teacher Recommendation Form—please give the form to a teacher who knows you well to complete and return to us (pdf)

A current school transcript (you may send this with your application materials or request that your school mail it separately)

$50 (U.S.) check made out to the Smith Summer Science and Engineering Program (If you are accepted, the $50 will become nonrefundable)

Costs and Financial Aid

The fee for participating in the 2008 Smith Summer Science and Engineering Program is $4,300 (U.S.), which covers the cost of all program materials and activities. Partial to full financial aid is available to a limited number of participants and is awarded solely on the basis of demonstrated financial need. More than half the participants in last year’s program received financial aid. Students requesting financial aid must complete the financial aid application and submit it with their completed application materials.

Please submit your completed application to:
