It's Fun to Live at Smith!
Since Smith's precollege programs are residential, you get the exciting opportunity to live in one of our architecturally unique campus houses. Smith's residential environment enhances and enriches our academic programs—living on Smith's beautiful campus is an integral part of your learning experience.
At Smith, your campus house will be your social home base. You will quickly discover that the house living rooms are where you may develop some of your most lasting friendships.
In the evenings, listen to a professional storyteller or hear published authors read their works, enjoy movie nights with friends or experience the arts and culture that Northampton is famous for.
Where You'll Live
Summer precollege students are housed in Northrop House, located on Elm Street; it has five stories and 76 rooms. Most students will have a room to themselves and a few will have an assigned roommate. Each room has a twin bed, desk, dresser, bookshelf and closet. If two students share a room, each will have her own bed, desk and dresser.
Northrop is centrally located on campus, with many places that are important to the program only a short walk away. It is also close to downtown Northampton, a great place to grab anything you might need or to just walk around with friends. There are restaurants, coffee shops, drug stores, boutiques, bookstores and a great ice cream parlor.
Dining at Smith
Dining at Smith combines unique traditions with a relaxed, accommodating atmosphere. All meals are prepared on-site by staff employed by the college. The dining services staff members are experienced in culinary production and are committed to providing you with quality, nutritious food. All residential students are on a full-board plan, which entitles them to breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week.
All meals are served buffet-style to accommodate busy program schedules.
Smith's superb athletic facilities include two gymnasiums, an indoor pool, indoor and outdoor track and tennis facilities, squash courts, horseback riding arena, dance studio, croquet court and fitness center.
In addition, Smith is home to a distinguished art museum; a gorgeous botanic garden and greenhouse; and four exciting libraries and a rare book room.
The Smith experience would not be complete without a sample of the local attractions and social life. Explore the beauty of campus or head downtown to check out what Northampton has to offer. Your fellow participants will be just like you: those who come to Smith not only to further their intellectual curiosity but also to connect with other students and have some fun!
