Program-Specific Eligibility Requirements
All Smith students must meet Smith College's eligibility requirements for approval to study abroad. Guest students are encouraged to check with their own Study Abroad office for similar approval requirements. Applicants for the Smith Programs Abroad in Florence, Geneva, Hamburg and Paris will also need to meet the program-specific requirements described below.
Florence
- Two years or the equivalent of college-level Italian: normally four 4-credit courses.
- The Smith College course ITL 250 or the equivalent during the spring semester preceding study abroad.
- The ability to follow coursework in Italian: aural comprehension, reading and writing ability; and to converse in Italian.
- Evidence of maturity, responsibility, preparation for study abroad and demonstrated interest in Italian culture.
Geneva
International Internship Semester (Track A)
- At least one year of college-level French or equivalent required for the fall semester. Students with any level of college-level French can apply for the spring semester.
- Background in political science or government
- Evidence of maturity, responsibility and preparation for study abroad and interning in an international organization
University Studies in French or English (Track B)
- Two years of college-level French or equivalent (year); and at least one year of French or equivalent (spring).
- Evidence of maturity, responsibility and preparation for study abroad.
Advanced Program in International Studies and Development (Track C)
- 3.5 GPA
- Commitment to year-long enrollment in the program
- Two years of college-level French or the equivalent.
- Evidence of maturity, responsibility and preparation for study abroad.
Hamburg
- The ability to follow coursework in German: aural comprehension, reading and writing ability, and communicative competence.
- Evidence of maturity, responsibility, preparation for study abroad and demonstrated interest in German culture.
Year-Long Program
Year-long Program: Two years or the equivalent of college- level German, normally four 4-credit courses, of which one should be taken in the spring semester preceding study abroad.
Spring Semester Program
One year of college-level German, typically two 4-credit courses.
Paris
- Two years or the equivalent of college-level French, normally four 4-credit courses, including one course at the FRN 250 level or above in the spring semester of the year before study in Paris.
- Students who enter Smith at the FRN 250 level or above are required to take at least three semesters of French prior to study in Paris, including one course at the FRN 250 level or above in the spring semester of the year before study in Paris. Students beginning with FRN 101 and 102 must take three 4-credit French courses in their sophomore year. Students who do not meet these requirements are encouraged to consult with a member of the Department of French Studies.
